Orthographic projection.
Introduction
This projection is an Azimuthal projection with a projection point at infinity.
Properties
- Only a hemisphere can be shown. This is due to the geometry of the projection.
- There is no distortion exactly at the projection origin and much distortion near the edge of the hemisphere.
- All meridians and parallels are either ellipses, circles, or straight lines.
- All great circles through the origin of the projection are shown as straight lines.
- The projection is neither conformal nor equal-area.
- The radial scale factor decreases as distance increases from the projection origin.
Example
Sample code
ILcdProjection projection =
new TLcdOrthographic(20.0, -50.0);
Implementation aspects
The plotting equations of the orthographic projection are taken from [Snyder1987].
